Background of the Study
Smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with significant implications for respiratory and cardiovascular health. In Lagos State, urbanization and lifestyle changes have contributed to a notable prevalence of smoking among both youths and adults. Cigarette smoking is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and ischemic heart disease (Oluwaseun, 2023; Eze, 2024). Despite numerous public health campaigns aimed at curbing tobacco use, the allure of smoking—often reinforced by aggressive marketing and peer influence—persists in Lagos. Urban stressors, social acceptability in certain circles, and limited enforcement of tobacco control regulations further contribute to high smoking rates. In addition, secondhand smoke exposure poses additional health risks for non-smokers, especially in densely populated urban settings. Understanding the prevalence of smoking and its associated health effects in Lagos State is vital for developing effective tobacco control policies and health promotion strategies.
Statement of the Problem
In Lagos State, smoking prevalence remains high despite existing tobacco control measures. The widespread availability of cigarettes and the influence of social and economic factors have contributed to the normalization of smoking. This trend not only increases the risk of smoking-related diseases among smokers but also exposes non-smokers to secondhand smoke. Health consequences, including respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular diseases, place a significant burden on the healthcare system. Additionally, there is insufficient localized research detailing the extent of smoking and its direct impact on public health in Lagos. These gaps hinder the design of targeted interventions and policies aimed at reducing smoking rates and mitigating its health effects.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of smoking among residents in Lagos State.
2. To assess the health effects associated with smoking and secondhand smoke exposure.
3. To recommend strategies to reduce smoking prevalence and improve public health outcomes.
Research Questions
1. What is the current prevalence of smoking in Lagos State?
2. What are the primary health effects of smoking and secondhand smoke exposure in the region?
3. What interventions can effectively reduce smoking rates and improve health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher smoking prevalence is significantly associated with increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
2. Exposure to secondhand smoke contributes to adverse health outcomes among non-smokers.
3. Strengthening tobacco control policies will significantly reduce smoking prevalence and improve health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study targets adult residents of Lagos State, with a focus on both smokers and non-smokers affected by secondhand smoke. Data will be gathered through surveys, medical records, and interviews. Limitations include potential underreporting of smoking behavior and regional differences in exposure levels.
